Niccolò Machiavelli
The realist survivability manual and the effectual-truth method; raison d'état answered by the inviolable Charter — effectual-truth in mechanism, deontological at the boundary.
Edition read. The whole Discourses (141 chapters) and the whole Prince, nine thematic close-reads.
What we took
The realist survivability engineer. The effectual-truth method — design against how people actually behave, because idealisation is not neutral but fatal — is the founding rationale of the simulation. Channeled contestation is a source of liberty, so suppressed friction, not friction, is the alarm; the Renewal Law makes periodic return to first principles a survivability requirement; and the bounded-emergency design (a power that acts fast within the frame but cannot touch the constitution, with live checks and a self-executing sunset) supplies the content a real emergency doctrine needs.
What we adapted
The ceiling's method is his: cap early and prospectively by pre-empting the avenues of concentration, never retroactively or as a faction's weapon; capture only the unearned rent (which "touches no patrimony") so the rebalancer is feared but not hated; and own the apparatus rather than renting it — a competent borrowed sensor captures its renter.
Where we diverge — and how we answer
Machiavelli collapses the ought into the is — whatever preserves the state is licensed. The doctrine fixes the ought as an inviolable Charter above the rebalancer, holding hardest under existential pressure where raison d'état would relax it. The lion (self-defence) and the fox (reading deception) are kept; the sovereign's licence to break faith with its own citizens is void.
The net position
The tradition's sharpest survivability manual — absorbed in method and mechanism, disciplined at the moral boundary; it out-realists the moralist on survivability and out-moralises the realist on means.
Every position is read at the source. See the whole register on Lineage & Critique, or the doctrine itself in The System.
